Thermal imaging using FLIR cameras - on the ground and in the air

DEEMI has been using FLIR for many years based on moveable sensor systems on board the HMMWVs, In addition, we now have capabilities on board our UAV Systems to use this important technology from the air.  Colder weather leads to an even better contrast in the heat signature to help find lost and missing people, and this can be used to continue the search at night.  We are constantly developing the sensors, image transmission and ways to optimize the use of these sensor systems.

Advanced Computer Mission Management System

DEEMI has been very actively engaged in the development of an Advanced Mission Management System.  Our goal has been to develope a System that can provide us with real-time or near real-time data.  After much hard work, we have arrived at Phase One of that plan.  

While much of this is proprietary, we have worked with the Air Force Research Lab/Wright University Graduate Students on the Imagery Management System now on our own DEEMI Server System.  We have also incorporated the DARPA funded SAR APP Mission Manager.  This gives DEEMI an unprecedented capability to manage searches and keep track of our teams in the field, as well as the data they collect

"Life Saver  Drop Pod " For Our Search & Rescue UAV's

DEEMI became the first Search and Rescue approved by the FAA to conduct UAV SAR missions. We then worked with University of Maine Engineering student Andrew Guillmette to develop a Medical Life Saver Pod for such concepts as delivery of epipens or pain medicaitons at remote trail sites or offshore.

On the photo top left you can see the pod system.  A parachute to decelerate fits in the base and the light is designed to see the device under the tree shroud and for night use by those it"s dropped to.  The system can drop up to 8 pounds of payload from the Viking U4 UAV.

We quickly realized during development that we could put many other important items into the Pod.  Items such as a cell phone/radio, water as well as nutribars and other items to aide the patient.   We have been conducting Field Trials on the Pod and we are very pleased with the results.

The middle picture above is the third generation, the finned area holds the parachute to deploy and the base mounts standard to our UAV, the UMaine Student, Mr. Guillmette used solenoid and electromagnet controls with remote control channels to deploy it safely.

It should be noted that the entire design and fabrication of our "Life Saver Drop Pod"  was done using CAD/CAM and 3D Printing technology.

This represents the commitment DEEMI has to working with Universities in an effort to advance Search and Rescue Technology.
